LeAnne Towne & James Coberly Smith
Performance Schedule
Saturday, September 24th, 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM
LeAnne Towne plays blues slide guitar and sings. She was a long-standing member of the Boise-based RED & GRAY (a Thousand Springs Festival favorite) before they went on hiatus earlier this year.
In the liner notes of James Coberly Smith's album, Cocomo, author Paul Zollo writes:
"[James] wasn't made for these times. But the 21st century is damn lucky to have a guy like him around. Because he writes and performs songs that belong to the ages; when they swing, they swing with the authority of real swing. When they're blue, they're about the deepest darkest blue you're going to hear. And when they're happy, the happiness is real, and it's infectious.
"So much of the music of modern times is about using mechanical means to imitate sounds, to make what isn't real seem like it is. His music is anything but that. In fact, it's the exact opposite. It's about the timeless truth. It's about what's real: real people and real love and real voices singing real harmonies with real acoustic guitars and piano and percussion and hands clapping, and nothing is programmed here, and nothing is fake."

About Mo Kelly

Hillfolk Noir
Performance Schedule
Sunday, September 25th, 1:45 PM - 2:45 PM
Filtered through a half-century of folk, country and rock 'n' roll, and fed by family history and an affinity for acoustic mountain music, medicine show culture and Depression-era string-band blues, Hillfolk Noir's peculiar roots gumbo is, like the carnival midway, at once inviting and foreboding.
Travis and Ali Ward, the husband-and-wife half of Hillfolk Noir's touring quartet, grew up in Sandpoint, Idaho, a panhandle county seat near the Canadian border where ghostly echoes of the region's settlers reverberate off the walls of the valley. Travis says, "The first time I heard a really old recording of a really great song, I was hooked. I love the sounds of the instruments, the uniqueness of the recordings, and most of all, I like the songs and the language."
Hillfolk Noir's contribution to this century-old language has been described as a dark, country-tinged, swampy-swingin', hillbilly-delta-blues-ragtime word machine. Acoustic death-folk works, too. Or Junkerdash, the band's invented name for its singular sound.
"We make the music for ourselves because we love it; we are having a great time and hopefully that is infectious," Travis says. "Music, especially live music, can be such a powerful experience for all kinds of people. Live music is a shared experience – a series of moments that can really change a person's day or outlook. That being said, our music seems to strike an emotional chord with many people – perhaps because to pull off this really acoustic old-time sound, we sing and play our guts out. Every song."

The Maillard Reaction, featuring Keaton Wilson, Carter Wilson, Tony Bowler, and special guests
Performance Schedule
Sunday, September 25th, 4:15 PM - 5:15 PM
In chef's parlance, the Maillard reaction is what happens when you apply heat to a food - it changes the food, causes a chemical reaction, and gives everything from meats to pastries a depth of flavor they didn't have before.
In the land of music, The Maillard Reaction is what happens when you take long-time friends and music afficianados from the south-central Idaho area, mix them together under the heat of the sun, and give them the chance to play live jazz ... it creates a musical experience where the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
Bringing the old and the new together in their original jazz compositions, The Maillard Reaction creates aural works of art whose complexity will leave your mouth watering for more. There couldn't be a better way to bring the 2011 Thousand Springs Festival to a close!
